Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper

The classic painting depicts Jesus Christ in a traditional pose as he experiences the last few days of his life. The original was a large mural produced in the Italian city of Milan and the scene was taken from the Christian Gospel of John 13:21 that many have since studied in great depth to understand the work itself.

The original mural measures an impressive 450 × 870 centimeters (15 feet × 29 ft) covering an entire wall in a Milanese monastery which has gone onto become hugely famous just for this. The mural was completed in 1498 after Da Vinci had worked since 1495 on it though would reguarly leave the work and return to add alterations several times over that period.

The actual medium used in this mural is Tempera on gesso, Pitch and Mastic which were common choices at that time. The Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan now enjoys plenty of tourism and general interest, both domestically and internationally, thanks to the significance of the work and the wider career of this extraordinary artist who produced significant contributions in many other fields of work such as inventions, drawings, and science.

Other great murals, paintings, sketches and prints by Leonardo da Vinci worth checking out include the likes of Female Head, Vitruvian Man, The Virgin of the Rocks (The Virgin with the Infant St. John Adoring the Infant Christ), Mona Lisa, Flying Machine, Testa di Giovinetta, Annunciation, Horse and Ride, St John the Baptist and Virgin and Child. Some of the sketches also show off Da Vinci's exceptional mind for invention.

The scene in The Last Supper shows 12 disciples with Jesus Christ as he explains that he believes one of these will double cross him. Indeed, it was just days before his death that this scene would have been hosted, with the 12 disciples believed to be Bartholomew, James, son of Alphaeus and Andrew, Judas Iscariot, Peter and John, Thomas, James the Greater and Philip, Matthew, Jude Thaddeus and Simon the Zealot. A script from Da Vinci was found several hundred years later and it outlines those in the painting which was crucial in their identification.

Leonardo da Vinci chose the mediums he did to create the mural because it offered him the opportunity to amend it later as he progressed the work to what we see today. By choosing dry walls for his work the amends were possible but sadly led to the work quickly deteriorating fairly soon after it had been finished meaning now it is in relatively bad condition. Fortunately enough study has been completed to offer good examples of how it originally appeared as the artist had intended.

Much of the poor condition of the original was down to poorly managed attempts over several centuries to improve it's appearance which actually made matters worse. Since then more bold decisions were taken to take care of the work with major changes to the building in which it is stored to control it's environment entirely.

A 21 year restoration was finally completed in 1999 to mixed responses with some unhappy with the work whilst others felt it had to be done considering the deterioration of it over the past centuries.

Many established artists have produced their own versions of the original with Andy Warhol's well known works sadly being the last before his death. The 1986 series was exhibited suitably in Milan. Salvador Dali's version can now be seen in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Further topics of study related to this fresco include works by the following other artists who also produced their own versions of The Last Supper fresco painting.

Much research has been made into the accuracy of the painting to real life events as believed in Christianity. Other accounts agree with the idea that Christ was aware of his betrayal by Judas at that very lunch, and that the meal was eaten in some sort of upper room with several accounts being approximately 25-50 years after the death of this Christian icon.

Most believe the lunch itself involved for Jesus just bread and wine plus important discussions with others at the table, marking a crucial moment in his life, captured by thousands of artists since. The role of Judas is well known ever since and this painting indicates the moment his behaviour was to be anticipated and revealed.
